Sustainable Development for Sustainability Skeptics: UN 2030 Development Goals in Eastern Kentucky
Programming proposal for a coding workshare project for reskilled coal miners pursuant to broader participation in the United Nations 2030 Sustainability Goals at the Letcher County Public Library. This project aims to empower new coders to understand their labor rights while using the library space to socially learn with other coders. Broadly, the project aims to include Letcher County in the global drive to sustainability while improving the working lives of former miners. Programming for new coders is consistent with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Target 8.8 which aims to “protect labor rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers.” With this proposed Coding Workshare program, new tech workers would benefit from coding skill instruction while enjoying renewed sociality in the workplace and inclusion in larger tech sector discourse.
